Subscription boxes are big business now, and you can buy them for nearly every thing imaginable. My daughter gets a monthly Birchbox, because at 15 make up is a big part of her life. I’ve personally loved the Hygge boxes available from Living Hygge and Hyggebox (review here) and I love the idea of happy mail popping through the letterbox now and again.

When I read about Hook and a Book on Facebook it sounded too good to not give it a go. Started in April, it takes a book a month and then builds a box of yarny, hooky themed products around it. I missed the month that they were doing The Hobbit (complete with dragon fingerless gloves: I may need to find a pattern for them on the interweb) but I ordered a June (July?) box which came this week.

My daughter is an eclectic reader, mostly of YA books, but she’s fond of a good thriller or murder. She was delighted at the idea that we could share a box. Thank Goodness it arrived on a Saturday or she’d have had a long wait for me to get back from work before opening it together!

The contents arrive in a nifty square box, wrapped in tissue paper and ready to peep into as soon as the box lid is open.

And once open, you can see the name suits the products perfectly… something hooky and something booky. This month’s book was The Giver, which I had never heard of then but am looking forward to reading when Sarah has finished with it.

An apple features in the book, so I’ve been told, so the crochet gifts were based around apples: a pattern for apple coasters, red, white, green and black wool and a stitch marker in the shape of an apple.

The pattern is an original designed for the box by Gina Renee Padilla, and my one criticism of the box is that there is no picture of the completed item included in the box. You can soon find it on the interweb, though, on the Hook and a Book website or by stalking their social media.

The Daughter and I talked it through, and we’re going to give the box a go for a few months. It’s good to get something that brings us together, so I’m looking forward to reading alongside the Lina and making things with or for her. She’s already on at me to get a coaster finished for her, so we’re taking the yarn and the book with us when we have a holiday in a couple of weeks!
