Planning in the Golden Afternoon Light: September Small Things Day 6

Any reader of my blog or follower on social media will know that I need a planner… now more than ever, as my menopause fog sometimes descends and drives me mad at a moment’s notice! As long as I have a notebook or a ringbound planner with a to-do list and a to-be-read list, I’m fine.

And after a busy weekend it’s been nice to take 30 minutes today to plan in the golden sunshine. I’ve got my fan on, so I don’t get too hot, but the warmth of the sun on my shoulders is quite cosy. My current planner is a brick of an A5 Filofax in stone, but when the Autumn gets serious I’m changing over to my A5 Ochre Malden. With a comfortable pen and grid paper, it’s ready for any lists I need to create.

Today’s list is my menu plan for September. I can see a subtle shift towards more slow-cooked meals: a stew left in the crock-pot for the day, or a bolognese mass-cooked one weekend and defrosted mid-week after a busy day. Plenty of chicken, too, and more dark green veg than ever: Kale, cabbage, pak choi, all sliced and stir fried quickly to keep the goodness in.

I have a hankering to make a proper apple crumble with custard as well. We eat desserts so rarely, and yet I’m really good at making crumble. Perhaps tomorrow, or Wednesday, with a lighter main meal to leave room. Or Thursday which looks set to be my daughter’s last relaxed evening with us before University on Sunday (two boozy nights out with the mates come on Friday and Saturday!) Yes, Thurday. A long-braised beef brisket, yorkshire puddings and a crumble to follow. I’ve got nothing on, so that might make sense.

I’ve decided to have one header for the whole season of small things: it’s one of my favourite pictures by Alex Geerts on Unsplash. I love the whole colour scheme, which just makes me feel so autumnal. I love the socks, the book, the blanket, the tea, the leaves and pumpkin. There are so many small pleasures in the picture, it’s like my ambition for this whole series in one simple shot.

And on the basis that we may well find ourselves in Lockdowns or unable to enjoy an absolutely normal Christmas under Covid regulations if numbers spike, why not read and plan alternatives? Celebrating a Contagious Christmas was written in response to the pandemic last year, and will need updating soon, but it is about celebrating whatever the situation, and does have good advice on stocking up an emergency cupboard, celebrating when travelling to relatives is impossible and putting the heart of Christmas back into the heart of the celebrations.
